BaselWorld 2011 - Serious Engineering On Your Wrist With Urwerk's UR110 And UR202S

Urwerk is one of those brands where reading time isn’t the primary concern, as there are other devices (e.g. iPhone or BlackBerry) that are much more accurate and cheaper to do so. Now, this rule goes for every mechanical timepiece, but one could try to justify a $7,000.- USD Rolex for reading time and it will be quite difficult to do so with a +/- $70,000.- USD Urwerk UR-110 (nicknamed ‘Torpedo’).

Urwerk is not about accuracy, reading time or creating ‘just’ an expensive luxury timepiece, it is about micro-engineering. Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei, the founders of Urwerk, are trying (and I think they are succeeding) to follow nobody and set their own limits when it comes to haute horlogerie. Extreme horlogerie I would call their pieces of art, as the design and mechanics are very uncommon and one’s eyes need time to adjust when looking at their timepieces for the first time.

As soon as I entered the Dream Factory in Basel, I knew that I was going to be surprised by the works of Urwerk, MB&F, Christophe Claret and Speake-Marin. More on the others later this month. During my visit to the Urwerk booth, I tried and handled two of their timepieces. The Urwerk UR110 ‘Torpedo’ which I have been covering before here on Fratellowatches, and the Urwerk UR202S with stainless steel bracelet.

The Urwerk 110 ‘Torpedo’ with its oil change indicator and moving and turning satellites was a feast for the eyes, especially to see the mechanics work as time is passing by. This timepiece is certainly coming alive when wearing it and playing with it. After three years, the oil change indicator will demonstrate that it’s time for a service as it will indicate ‘red’ to its wearer. The satellite system is impressive to see at work, as the satellite will flip over to the next upcoming hour when it is at 9 o’clock, as you can see on the picture above. The UR110 indicates it is 11:00 and the next satellite in line is transforming already from 9 to 12.

As you can see on the second picture in this article, the watch is actually quite wearable despite its unusual design. Even if your cuff partly slides over the watch, you will be able to tell time.

Another very cool timepiece that Urwerk showed me is their UR202S. Based on the UR202, this ‘S’ model comes with a stainless steel bracelet. A bracelet that reminds me a lot of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak bracelets. Perhaps because I am really a fan of those and wanted it to be like it, but the Urwerk representative told me I was thinking in the right direction. I’ll let you decide what that means.

Anyway, this watch has an automatic movement (caliber 7.03) and features a moon phase disc and day/night indicator. Also with this 202S, we see the typical Urwerk satellite system of displaying time. This Hammerhead Urwerk comes in various materials and the one is shown here, watch hublot, is in stainless steel. A large and heavy watch (45.7mm x 43.5mm wide and 15mm in height) that might not suit everyone. At least make sure to try one on before you order

One of the neat features of the UR202S are the twin turbines that control the air friction by the rotor when spinning around in its free direction (note that this watch only winds in one direction). By setting the switch on the back of the watch, the wearer can indicate whether there is normal activity when wearing the UR202S, vigorous activity or extreme activity (think of playing golf with this watch on your wrist). In case of normal activity, the turbines will spin freely and are functioning as a cushion for sharp movements of the rotor. In vigorous mode, the twin turbines will reduce the rotor winding rate with approximately 35%. In its extreme mode, both the twin turbines and the rotor are fully blocked, protecting them from heavy shocks and abuse. Certainly a useful feature if you ask me.

I have to say that although the UR110 is certainly an impressive work of art and engineering, the UR202S stole my heart. The bracelet design, the moon phase complication and twin turbine solution are definitely something I really appreciate in this timepiece. The price of approximately $150.000,- USD is holding me back, but I am sure there are collectors out there willing to pay for this magnificent piece of extreme horlogerie.

T5K429_2-1Yesterday Timex announced a new collection of Ironman watches called "Lap Brights." Similar to the profusion of competitor G-Shocks, the Lap Brights have a competitive list of features:

600 pieces only, a weight of 12 Kgs and 600 pages telling the story of 130 Rolex Daytona watches in prestine condition, dated from 1960 and on. Pucci Papaleo Editore did an amazing job on describing these watches with this level of detail, delivering it in one book that is entirely bound by hand with a leather lined 8mm wood binding. The team of Pucci had some help from only the best vintage horology specialists, quality replica watch, who consist of collectors, watchmakers and retailers.

For photographing all these time pieces, rolex explorer II replica, the most advanced photography techniques have been used and in the end (it is about the result) it has been printed with the highest resolution possible.

This said, it perhaps gives you more understanding on the price tag of 4000 Euro. I am pretty sure that the serious Daytona collectors consider this to be the Rolex Daytona Bible. As a vintage Daytona collector, I also assume that reference work like this is absolutely necessary to be sure on every little detail when you buy one of these beauties.

SpidoSpeed II Linde Werdelin SpidoSpeed Chronograph Watch

I think that the perlage polish applied base dial will be a stunning design element on this new watch from Linde Werdelin. With a release date of around May 2011,daytona replica, the new SpidoSpeed is the next iteration of the SpidoLite watch concept, and the brand's first chronograph model. The relatively svelte case needed to be increased by 3mm in height to incorporate the mechanical chronograph movement. I actually like that - as the design of the case can accommodate a chunky look quite well. The watch is now 44mm wide by 15mm tall.

SpidoSpeed Exploded case 531x1024 Linde Werdelin SpidoSpeed Chronograph Watch

The SpidoSpeed is in steel, not titanium. Will there be future models in titanium? Probably. What you see here is only the first "Series A" model of the watch. There will be 100 pieces of this version, and after that Linde Werdelin likely has a few tricks up their sleeve for other versions. You can see the complex make up of the case, and the nearly integrated chronograph pushers. Prone to now using interesting movements, inside the SpidoSpeed is a Concepto caliber 2251 - a movement I have never heard about. I suspect it is a maybe a base ETA or Frederic Piguet that has been decorated or redone by Concepto. Linde Werdelin does use their own rotor, which is quite neat looking with a web patter and done in black.

The steel case is done in what Linde Werdelin calls "steel microbille" That is fancy talk for it having a sand or bead-blasted case finish. There needs to be some serious naming standards in the watch industry applied to keep us from being permanently confused.

SpidoSpeed dial parts Linde Werdelin SpidoSpeed Chronograph Watch

Linde Werdelin got the dial done right. It looks very nice, is legible, and has that skeletonized feel they were going for. See the little "R" in the chronograph hours subdial? That stands for the Reef or the Rock (the brands computerized sensor instrument). It is placed at about 4.5 hours, which is how long they take to charge. I am liking this watch a long and really look forward to spending some quality time with it. Just me,wholesale replica watch, the SpidoSpeed, a little psychotropic drug action, and I am off to pretend I am in one of their comic books.

I will get some hands-on action of the SpidoSpeed Chronograph in March. Until then, if you like it, you can start saving up. Retail price for the limited edition of 100 pieces watch will be 11,760 euros.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Presents The Master Memovox Inter

Nov

The Memovox is probably the most sought-after Jaeger-LeCoultre watch amongst collectors. JLC is about to present a limited series of three new Master Memovox International watches at the Parisian concept store Colette. Why? Well, from the 29th of November till the 31st of December, replica fake rolex, 25 participants are showing off their best pieces of art (and timepieces are included in that definition) during a project called ‘The Cabinet of Curiosities by Thomas Erber’.

For this event at Colette, Jaeger-LeCoultre has created a special edition of the Master Memovox International watch in a black PVD-coated steel case. This model is issued in a three-piece limited edition.

The Memovox was introduced in 1956 and features a mechanical alarm. The International edition of the Memovox has a city disc displaying 24 cities (because of the 24 hour timezones) that can be selected using the 2nd crown. For this special event at Colette, rolex swiss replica, the word “Paris” has been replaced with “Colette”,rolex replica best, the name of the famous concept store. The automatic movement (caliber 956) consists of 268 parts and has a 45-hour power-reserve. Wearable for everyone, since the case diameter is only 40mm.
